INDIVIDUALIZED ACUPUNCTURE CARE

Treatment

Acupuncture treatment begins with an individual assessment

An acupuncture visit should begin with enough history and assessment for the practitioner to understand the patient’s concerns, identify relevant risks and determine whether the requested service is within the practitioner’s scope and competence.

Consultation and health history

The practitioner may ask about the reason for the visit, relevant health history, medications, previous treatment and other information needed for safe care.

Individual treatment planning

Needle selection, point selection and the overall approach are determined by the practitioner based on assessment, professional judgment and the services they are authorized and competent to provide.

Acupuncture

A Registered Acupuncturist is authorized to practise acupuncture. The specific techniques used, treatment duration and follow-up plan vary by practitioner and patient.

Adjunct services

Some practitioners may offer other services within their authorized scope and competence. A clinic should clearly distinguish acupuncture from herbal medicine or other TCM services that require different licensing authority.

Informed consent and a suitable practice environment matter

BC professional standards require informed consent and set expectations for a professional practice environment. The operating clinic should explain the proposed service, relevant risks, alternatives and what the patient can expect.

A website cannot determine whether acupuncture is appropriate for you

Symptoms can have many causes and some require medical assessment. Online information should not replace individualized evaluation by an appropriately qualified health professional.
